When I first laid eyes on this photograph, I knew right away that it was more than an ordinary picture; it "was" Topaz, my first Wofhound.  Her spirit and her soul were revealed in the photo and I knew the picture had captured the Topaz that l will always remember. I believe that to be the quintessential essence of canine portraiture; to take not just a "pretty picture" but to capture the expressions and actions that keep our pets alive in our minds. Photos that invoke memories of the personalities that make them so unique.

We can sometimes see this essence in a traditional studio portrait but other times we're better reminded of who they are or were by seeing them out in the field, at the park, working on the farm, or comfortably curled up in front of the fireplace.
